D.O. Ribera del Duero

When Dominio Basconcillos decided to launch its winery project, we looked in the part of the Ribera region that has the longest wine making tradition. It was here that the Benedictine monks introduced grape growing around their monastery and taught wine making, and where the most extreme microclimatic conditions are found and can be used to obtain fruit with more intense flavour and aromas.

Located in a privileged location as it is the municipality of Gumiel de Izan, noble historical past and wine-producing tradition, the vineyards of Domino Basconcillos cover the smooth and extended slopes that draw the Ribera del Duero geography. Wines and cellars are inside the property with and area of 50 ha. and situated 1.000 meters above sea level, forms an unexpected valley. The fact that our wines are located in a plot 1.000 meters above sea level gives them character.

Located in the area of Alto Duero and constituted by municipalities of the counties of Burgos, Valladolid, Soria and Segovia. It comes up just after the initiatives and concerns of some traditional cellars and wine makers, with long tradition, to boost the vineyards and the wines of Ribera del Duero.

The climate of these area is typical Continental with smooth Atlantic influences, it is characterised by cold winters and hot summers. The 21st of July, 1982, The Ministry of Agriculture awarded Ribera del Duero with the Origin Denomination, and at the same time approved its regulations.

Since then, the bank of Duero river has seen in the last years, the Origin Denomination that has given the name to, it has grown, both in number of cellars and in prestige, until becoming a wine-producing region in and out of our frontiers. Among the types of grapes, this region has the “tempranillo” or known as well as “tinta del país” or “tinto fino”, as the main variety, which gives colour, aroma and body to the wines of Ribera del Duero.
